Chapter 14

Ray's chest was tight, his lip practically bleeding from his teeth scraping over the delicate skin. His feet pounded against the sidewalk as he made his way into downtown. Evan's voice when he'd called spoke volumes about everything. Evan didn't need to tell him what he saw, he could just hear it in the meekness and total defeat that overshadowed his usually strong, proud tone.

'I'll kill that fucker I swear to fucking God,' Ray thought, growling and baring his teeth furiously. His phone buzzed and he grabbed it out of his pocket, finding a message from Jeanette: 'I'll be there in 5.' Ray sighed in relief, more than glad that she was just as worried about the whole circumstance as he was. God knew that Evan needed more people than were willing to actually give him the hand he needed right now.

He rounded the corner, looking for Abe's Diner, where Evan had begged him to meet him at. He groaned, running his fingers through his unkempt hair and shaking his head. This was fucking ridiculous. This whole situation was way too surreal. Four days ago, life was just fine. How could everything turn to Hell so quickly on them?

He finally made his way to the restaurant, practically breaking through the door. He panted, looking around and finding Evan's brown hair standing out against the beige wall color. He raised his brow to see that Justin and Rick were still with him, sitting in the opposite booth, but pushed the thoughts away. He sped over and launched down into the seat next to Evan. "Dude, are you okay?" he asked, wincing at Evan's broken expression.

Evan blinked at him, shaking his head slowly. "No. No I'm not. Ray...He...Jerry he..." he trailed off, breaking off their gazes and staring down at the coffee table.

"I know, Dude," he bit his lip, rubbing his shoulder. "I was actually on the way to get you so me and Jeanette could tell you when you called."

The boy's shoulders dropped and he sighed. "Ray...when did I get so fucking stupid?" he asked.

Ray narrowed his eyes, "You ain't 'stupid', Evan. Jerry's just a dickhead."

"I've been saying that for years but you fuckers don't listen to me," Justin scoffed, taking a sip of soda.

"Why the fuck are you here?" Ray raised his brow suspiciously.

Justin shrugged. "I love seeing Evan about to cry," he waved dismissively. Ray snarled, going to move before Evan pulled him back down.

"He's just saying that," he rolled his eyes. "He's actually on my side."

Ray blinked in surprise. "Seriously?"

"We both are," Rick piqued up. "That ain't right what Jerry did to you, Evan."

"Tell me about it," Evan grumbled, laying his head down on the table exhaustively. "I don't know where to go from here."

"Forward," Ray said firmly. Green eyes flickered up to him and he could feel his heart aching from the saddened gleam overshadowing them. "You say 'fuck you, Copeland' and you keep moving on."

Evan raised his head and frowned, "Ray...Justin says that everyone thinks I'm a fucking slut," he twisted his face.
